What grinding is used for

Parts are ground when turning or milling is not accurate enough or the part is hardened: bearing seats, fits, guideways and sealing faces. Cylindrical grinding works outside and inside diameters, surface grinding works flat faces.

What matters about the grinding machine

The key figures are the distance between centres and the grinding diameter for cylindrical grinding, or the table size for surface grinding. Tolerances of a few micrometres are possible but require temperature-controlled rooms and suitable measuring equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Is grinding done before or after hardening?

Usually after hardening. The part is pre-turned with stock allowance, hardened and then ground to final size.

Which tolerances can be achieved?

In cylindrical grinding ±0.002 to ±0.005 mm is common. Each listing states the range the shop commits to for its machine.

Is one of your machines idle next week?

List it before the week stays empty.
