Which parts suit CNC milling

Milling makes prismatic parts: plates, brackets, housings, fixtures and mould parts. On 3-axis machines the part is re-clamped for each side; a fourth axis allows several sides to be machined in one setup.

What matters about the milling machine

The key figures are the travels in X, Y and Z, the table load and the spindle speed. Aluminium calls for high speeds, steel and titanium for a rigid machine bed. Each listing states the width and length of the largest part that fits the machine.

Frequently asked questions

3-axis or 5-axis: what do I need?

A 3-axis machine is enough for parts that can be machined from a few sides. Angled faces, undercuts and free-form surfaces need five axes or several setups.

Which tolerances are common in milling?

On machining centres ±0.02 to ±0.05 mm is common. Tighter tolerances are possible but depend on the machine, the setup and the temperature. Each listing states the range the shop commits to.

Is one of your machines idle next week?

List it before the week stays empty.
