What thermoforming is used for
In thermoforming a heated plastic sheet or film is drawn over a tool, usually by vacuum. Sheet becomes hoods, cladding, trays and workpiece carriers; film becomes packaging and trays. Tools cost far less than injection moulds, so the process pays off even for small and medium runs.
What matters on a thermoforming machine
What counts is forming area, draw depth and the sheet thickness the machine processes. Trimming almost always follows, for technical parts usually on a CNC router. Ask whether the shop has trimming and toolmaking in-house.
Frequently asked questions
Which plastics can be thermoformed?
ABS, polystyrene, PET, polypropylene, polyethylene and polycarbonate are common. The choice depends on impact strength, temperature and appearance.
How accurate are thermoformed parts?
The tool side holds its dimensions; wall thickness decreases with draw depth. Tolerances of a few tenths of a millimetre are usual; the listing states what the shop commits to.
Is one of your machines idle next week?
List it before the week stays empty.
