What EDM is used for
EDM removes material with electrical sparks and machines any conductive material regardless of hardness. Wire EDM cuts contours and openings with sharp inside corners; sinker EDM forms cavities with an electrode. Typical parts are punches, dies, mould inserts and gear profiles.
What matters about the EDM machine
For wire EDM the travels, the maximum cutting height and the taper angle count. Sinker EDM adds electrode manufacture and tool changers. EDM is slow, but precise and free of cutting forces.
Frequently asked questions
Which materials can be machined by EDM?
All electrically conductive ones: hardened steel, carbide, titanium, copper and aluminium. Non-conductive materials such as most plastics cannot be machined by EDM.
How accurate is wire EDM?
±0.005 mm is common, tighter with several skim cuts. Each listing states the range the shop commits to.
Is one of your machines idle next week?
List it before the week stays empty.
